Tablets & Apps in MFL Teaching and Learning Conference
28th March in NUIM

This promises to be an exciting conference organised by PPLI and Maynooth University and supported by subject associations and others - more info later! 
 
This conference which will take place in Maynooth University will bring together language teachers from post-primary schools in Ireland as well as those on Initial Teacher Education courses. The keynote presentation will be by Joe Dale (Joe Dale works with a range of organisations such as Network for Languages, ALL, and the BBC, he is host of the TES MFL forum,  a regular conference speaker and recognised expert on technology and language learning.His bloghas been nominated for four Edublog Awards).
 
Interactive workshops will provide examples of how teachers are using apps in their language classes. We would like to explore the following topics amongst others:
  • Possibilities that tablets offer in language teaching and learning
  • How to make the most of a particular app
  • Apps for developing particular skills
  • Using apps for assessment
  • Social Media in the MFL classroom
  • Using smart phones in class
  • Apps for sharing students work
  • Apps for homework and self-access
  • Apps for teachers’ language upskilling
  • Other suggestions
If you are a MFL teacher we would LOVE your input! If you would be available to present please take a few minutes to fill outthis form:
 
If you would prefer just to attend without presenting you are also more than welcome! Clickherefor registration - there is a small charge of 15 euro to cover basic costs but students receive a 50% discount and presenters are free (travel expenses will also be paid to presenters)

You can now view the website on any device. There are also separate menus for teachers and students with different relevant resources - teachers can access resources and ideas as well as find useful advice and links to CPD information and opportunities. Students might find the Apps for Learning categories more relevant as well as all the great playlists and pins on our YouTube and Pinterest accounts. 

In particular, a lot of work has been done recently on providing up-to-date and relevant resources and information for French and Spanish teachers and students. Every week a new French video is featured on our French blog Souris c'est lundi! along with lots of links for exploring the relevant theme further and with accompanying teaching ideas. These videos are chosen in particular because they are accessible and interesting to young people. 

If you check out our special Pinterest account for Spanish you will find more than 1000 resources relevant in the Irish post-primary context pinned there - whether you are looking for vocabulary, grammar, teaching ideas, apps for learning Spanish, or specific themes, you will find it there and much more.

More than 70 resources feature in our section on Polish - these will be of huge benefit to students taking Polish as a non-curricular language in their Leaving Cert who do not have access to a teacher or resources.

Resources for LC Polish

We now have more than 70 resources on our website to assist students taking Polish as a non-curricular exam subject in the Leaving Cert. Please share this information with any Polish students you are in contact with as they would really help them to prepare for the exam. The resources are available by clicking here
Scholarship to Spain

Spanish Scholarships for 2 students and their teacher

The Post-Primary Languages Initiative in collaboration with the Consejería de Educación  de la Embajada de España en Dublin is delighted to announce its annual competition for  5th year students of Spanish.  La Junta de Castilla y León  and the Spanish Tourist Office in Dublin are sponsoring the competition so we would like to invite students to produce a brief presentation or video. Using images, videos  and other ICT tools, the video should illustrate  an itinerary for  “A weekend in Castilla y León ”.

1st prize:  3 scholarships to cover the cost of flights, accommodation and language school for a week in Castilla y León during the summer of 2015 for 2 students and their teacher

2nd and 3rd prize:  3 scholarships each to cover the cost of a one week language course and accommodation  for 2 students and their teacher.

The competition is open to all 5th year students of Spanish in Ireland. More info here
